About the Author

Abdur Rosyid, the author, is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Khalifa University, UAE, where he spent his time in the technical development of autonomous mobile manipulation for Mohammed bin Zayed International Robotic Challenges (MBZIRC) 2020, for which he was a team lead. Afterwards, he has been focusing on his research on robotics for manufacturing of large-size structures, in which he filed two US patents of novel robotic systems. He with Dr. Bashar El-Khasawneh founded Dexter Robotics, a robotics startup, which is currently in incubation.

The author finished his PhD in Engineering at Khalifa University, UAE, where he built a novel five-axis machine tool based on hybrid serial-parallel kinematics. It was a complete development of an automated machine, starting from topology design, design optimization, kinematics formulation, rigid and flexible multibody dynamics formulation, model-free and model-based control systems, gravity compensation, kinematic calibration, system identification (identification of dynamic parameters), and fabrication.

Earlier the author attended his MSc in Mechanical Engineering at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, with concentration on applied mechanics, dynamics, and control. His MSc thesis was modeling the dynamics of a rotating system by using reduced-order finite elements and controlling the system’s vibration by using LQR and ANFIS controllers. The author got his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Indonesia, with concentration in design, applied mechanics, dynamics, and control. His individual final project was on the software development for the kinematic synthesis of a function-generation fourbar linkage. The author was immersed to engineering since his very early ages when he attended a dual-system vocational high school (50% at school, 50% at industry), majoring in mechanical engineering and subsequently worked as a mechanical technician at PT PAL Indonesia, the largest shipyard in the country. Before attending his MSc, he worked in a non-profit organization as a web designer, developer, and maintainer, and afterwards an operations manager.


Saya Abdur Rosyid. Saya menempuh studi S1 saya di Departemen Teknik Mesin Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Indonesia, kemudian melanjutkan S2 di Departemen Teknik Mesin King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, dan berikutnya S3 di Departemen Teknik Mesin Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Uni Emirat Arab.

Sebelum belajar di ITS, saya belajar tentang permesinan selama tiga setengah tahun di STM Perkapalan Sidoarjo – Pusdiklat PT PAL Surabaya. Ketika itu saya mengambil Jurusan Permesinan, dengan tugas akhir berjudul ‘Analisa Geometri Pahat Bubut Rata Luar’. Sebagaimana tergambar dalam judul tugas akhir tersebut, fokus belajar saya ketika itu adalah permesinan (machining). Beruntung sekali saya bisa merasakan pendidikan kejuruan permesinan di STM Perkapalan Sidoarjo in cooperation with Pusdiklat PT PAL Surabaya. Menurut penilaian saya, sekolah ini merupakan salah satu sekolah menengah kejuruan terbaik di bidangnya ketika itu. Kelengkapan perangkat-perangkat belajarnya, kedisiplinan, sistem pendidikannya, dan iklim belajarnya yang kondusif merupakan beberapa diantara kelebihannya. Belajar di Pusdiklat PT PAL ketika itu adalah sebuah kemujuran yang besar, karena disana kita belajar dalam lingkungan industri berskala besar.

Di ITS, saya mengambil Desain sebagai konsentrasi saya, dengan tugas akhir berjudul ‘Pembuatan Perangkat Lunak Sintesis Kinematis Four Bar Linkage Jenis Function Generation’. Alasan saya memilih Desain sebagai konsentrasi adalah karena saya menyukai hal-hal yang berbau perancangan, analisis, sintesis, intuisi, dan seni. Saya merasa mendapati semua itu pada Desain.

Untuk lebih mendalami dunia mechanical engineering, saya melanjutkan studi master dengan konsentrasi di bidang mekanika, dinamika, dan pengendalian. Tesis master saya mengkaji pengendalian cerdas getaran pada model elemen hingga tereduksi sistem rotor – bantalan luncur. Berikutnya, alhamdulillah, saya menyelesaikan studi doktoral saya dengan konsentrasi di bidang robotika untuk aplikasi manufaktur. Disertasi doktoral saya adalah desain, analisis, dan fabrikasi mesin perkakas 5-sumbu berkinematika hibrida. Semoga Allah memberikan kemudahan dan taufiq kepada saya dalam memberikan kontribusi yang lebih besar dan lebih banyak lagi. Amin ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.
